In a recent update made to Cloudflare Workers, I made similar kinds of modifications to an internal data pipeline that reduced the number of JavaScript promises created in certain application scenarios by up to 200x. To achieve usable performance, every major runtime has resorted to non-standard internal optimizations for Web streams. Node.js, Deno, Bun, and Cloudflare Workers have all developed their own workarounds. This is particularly true for streams wired up to system-level I/O, where much of the machinery is non-observable and can be short-circuited.
